The sides have had a \u201cconstructive, business-like\u201d phone conversation, Moscow has said<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/strong>Russian President Vladimir Putin has held a phone conversation with the head of the Syrian administration, Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa, for the first time since the fall of former President Bashar Assad’s government, the Kremlin\u00a0announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Moscow supports Syria\u2019s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, Putin told al-Sharaa, according<\/a> to the Kremlin. The Russian leader emphasized the importance of stabilizing the situation in the country and fostering dialogue among all ethnic, religious, and political groups in Syrian society.<\/p>\n

\u201cVladimir Putin has reaffirmed Russia\u2019s unfailing determination to contribute to the improvement of the social and economic situation in Syria, including through providing humanitarian assistance to its people,\u201d<\/em> the Kremlin\u2019s statement read. The Russian president also hailed the historically friendly relations between the two nations, which he said were \u201cbound by the ties of mutually beneficial cooperation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The high-level phone conversation was \u201cconstructive, business-like, and substantial,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0with the sides discussing\u00a0trade, economy and education,\u00a0the Kremlin said. It followed the first Russian diplomatic visit to Syria since its leadership change in late December.<\/p>\n

Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, who led the Russian delegation last month, said at the time that the power shift in Damascus \u201cwill not change the nature\u201d<\/em> of relations between the two nations. During the visit, Bogdanov met with al-Sharaa, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, Health Minister Maher al-Sharaa, and representatives from several Russian government agencies.<\/p>\n

Al-Sharaa, also known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Julani, became Syria\u2019s de facto leader in December 2024 after his Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) jihadist group launched a surprise attack on Damascus, forcing former President Bashar Assad to flee the country.<\/p>\n

Since the power shift, the new administration has repeatedly expressed its intention to maintain good relations with Moscow. In December, al-Sharaa told Al Arabiya News that the two nations share \u201cstrategic interests.\u201d<\/em> He also said Damascus was interested in maintaining good relations with the \u201csecond most powerful country in the world,\u201d<\/em> referring to Moscow.<\/p>\n

Earlier in February, Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra told The Washington Post<\/em> that Damascus was willing to allow Russia to keep its naval and air bases on Syrian soil, provided it serves the Arab nation\u2019s interests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
