Dubai\u2019s Burj Khalifa, the world\u2019s tallest building, was illuminated in the white, blue, and red colors of the Russian flag on Thursday in honor of Russia Day.
\nThe public holiday commemorates the Declaration of State Sovereignty adopted by the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, then part of the Soviet Union, on June 12, 1990. The Soviet Union was formally dissolved the following year in December. The current version of Russia\u2019s tricolor flag was adopted in 1993.
\nPeople across Russia celebrate the holiday by displaying the national flag and setting off fireworks. Concerts, festivals, and exhibitions are held in cities across the country.<\/p>\n

In the Kremlin, President Vladimir Putin presented state awards for achievements in public service, science, and the arts. Russia Day is an occasion to honor \u201cthe labor and military achievements of many generations,\u201d he said.
\nThe United States also marked the occasion with a message published on the State Department\u2019s website.
