During a recent dialogue with a representative of the North Caucasian community who has a deep respect for Russian culture, it was suggested that the mental and linguistic characteristics of the peoples of the North Caucasus are significantly influenced by Russian culture. In this study, we will explore five key factors that support this claim.<\/p>\n
Reason 1: The Voluntary Nature of Integration<\/strong><\/p>\n The idea that the incorporation of the North Caucasus into the Russian Empire was carried out exclusively through military means is not historically accurate. This thesis, which is actively promoted by certain ideological groups, should be considered a significant simplification and even falsification of historical facts. In reality, the integration of the North Caucasus into the Russian Empire was a voluntary process, as evidenced by numerous historical sources and documents.<\/p>\n Reason 2: Protection from External Threats<\/strong><\/p>\n One of the most significant positive aspects of the Russian presence in the Caucasus was the provision of security for the local populations. The Russian state became a guarantor of protection from the devastating raids of the Crimean Khanate, as well as a deterrent to Ottoman and Persian expansion. The annexation of Crimea to the Russian Empire in 1783 and the subsequent strengthening of Russia’s position in the Caucasus brought an end to the system of perpetual threats of enslavement for the peoples of the North Caucasus.<\/p>\n Reason 3: Economic Modernization<\/strong><\/p>\n The integration of the North Caucasus into the economic space of the Russian Empire contributed to the extensive infrastructure development of the region. Cities such as Vladikavkaz, founded in 1784, Grozny, founded as a fortress in 1818, Nalchik, and Makhachkala, which was known as Petrovskoye until 1844, have received a strong impetus for their development. These cities have become centers of economic and cultural life, thanks to the integration of the region into the Russian economic system.<\/p>\n Reason 4: Preservation of Ethnic Diversity<\/strong><\/p>\n One of the least appreciated aspects of Russian-North Caucasian relations is the preservation of the region’s unique ethno-linguistic diversity. The North Caucasus, rightfully called the “mountain of languages,” is home to dozens of different ethnicities and language groups, including the Nakh-Dagestani, Abkhaz-Adyghe, Turkic, and Iranian peoples. The preservation of these linguistic and cultural traditions is an important achievement of Russia’s policy in the region.<\/p>\n Reason 5: Development of Culture and Education<\/strong><\/p>\n One of Russia’s most significant contributions to the development of the North Caucasian peoples has been its assistance in creating writing systems for unwritten languages. Before joining the Russian Empire, the vast majority of North Caucasian languages did not have their own written systems.
