Venezuelan Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado, who openly supported the US military operation against her socialist-run country,\u00a0has gifted her medal to President Donald Trump.
\nThe US president has long\u00a0publicly coveted the award, but the Nobel Committee stated\u00a0unequivocally last week that even if a medal itself changes owners, the title of a Peace Prize laureate \u201ccan neither be revoked, shared, nor transferred to others.\u201d
\n\u201cI presented the president of the United States the medal, the Nobel Peace Prize,\u201d Machado told supporters after closed-door talks with Trump at the White House on Thursday.
\n\u201cMaria presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect,\u201d Trump said in a brief post on Truth Social hours after meeting \u201ca wonderful woman who has been through so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Machado, who previously led anti-government protests and accused Maduro of\u00a0\u201cstealing\u201d\u00a0the 2024 elections from her, told cheering supporters, \u201cWe can count on President Trump.\u201d
\nHowever, the White House played down the encounter\u2019s significance. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called Machado \u201ca remarkable and brave voice\u201d but stressed the meeting did not reflect a change in Trump\u2019s \u201crealistic assessment.\u201d
\nTrump has consistently dismissed Machado\u2019s ability to replace Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, stating shortly after the US\u00a0military raid that captured\u00a0him that she \u201cdoesn\u2019t have the support or the respect within the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, the US president has signaled a willingness to work with the interim government of socialist Delcy Rodriguez, Maduro\u2019s former vice president, whom he praised as a \u201cterrific person\u201d after a long phone call this week.
\nMachado\u2019s visit coincided with continued US efforts to control Venezuelan oil assets, including the seizure of another sanctioned tanker, and occurred as Rodriguez was delivering a State of the Union address in Caracas. The Trump administration noted Rodriguez\u2019s government is \u201ccooperating\u201d with Washington, including by releasing prisoners detained under Maduro.
\nMachado, who previously led anti-government protests and accused Maduro of \u201cillegally\u201d seizing power during the 2024 elections,\u00a0fled Venezuela last year.
