Beijing takes exception to US President Donald Trump\u2019s attempts to use Russia and China as an excuse for his push into the Arctic, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has said.
\nTrump claimed last week that the US must annex Greenland \u2013 an autonomous former Danish colony under Copenhagen\u2019s sovereignty \u2013 to contain Russia and China, suggesting that the two countries would \u201ctake over\u201d the island unless Washington did it first.
\nBeijing \u201cdoes not support the US using China or Russia as pretexts for its own self-interest,\u201d Mao told a press conference on Monday. The Arctic \u201caffects the common interests of the international community\u201d and Beijing\u2019s activities in the region \u201cstrengthen peace, stability and sustainable development in accordance with international law.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nDanish MP Rasmus Jarlov stated that \u201cfantasies\u201d about a major threat from China and Russia against Greenland are \u201cdelusional.\u201d A senior European diplomat also told the Financial Times that no Russian or Chinese military activity has been detected near Greenland.
\nMoscow has yet to officially respond to Trump\u2019s latest remarks, but it has previously stressed that Greenland\u2019s future must be determined by its citizens and dismissed claims that Russia poses a threat.\u00a0
