This can only happen in the EU, where the farming industry is in decline, she added.<br \/>\nLast February, the European Commission approved a new food ingredient for human consumption made from dried and ground mealworm larvae, the young form of beetles. The move became part of the bloc\u2019s plan to introduce more sustainable protein sources, which allows up to 4% of the insect-based powder in products such as bread, cheese, pasta, and jams.<br \/>\nOgloblina told TASS on Tuesday that \u201cin Russia, we have never eaten and will never eat insects. Never\u2026 It\u2019s out of the question. We have plenty of land. That\u2019s why we are sticking to our real Russian food,\u201d Ogloblina stressed.<br \/>\nLast year, the head of the St. Petersburg Institute of Management and Food Technologies, Olga Ponomareva, said that sweet bars and yogurts with insect-based proteins could hit the shelves in Russia in the next three to five years, but in order for that to happen \u201ccultural prejudices must be overcome and effective methods of processing and achieving food safety developed.\u201d\u00a0<br \/>\nUnlike in Europe, insects have long been part of diets in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
