NATO would end up losing its \u201cmeaning\u201d if conflicts break out within the bloc, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said, condemning Washington\u2019s renewed interest in taking Greenland from Denmark.
\nSpeaking to reporters on Tuesday, Tusk voiced his support for Denmark in the reinvigorated row between the NATO member state and the bloc\u2019s leader, the US. Washington reiterated its aspirations to get the island under its control, citing national security interests and the need to \u201cprotect\u201d the Arctic.
\n\u201cNo \u200cmember should attack or threaten another member of the North Atlantic Treaty. Otherwise, \u200cNATO would \u2060lose its meaning if conflict or mutual conflicts occurred \u200cwithin the alliance,\u201d Tusk stated.
\nWhile Denmark could \u201ccount on the solidarity of the whole of Europe,\u201d the bloc\u2019s members must \u201censure that transatlantic ties, which are the foundation of NATO and our security, do not suffer in the coming days and months,\u201d Tusk added. The remarks come as Poland, alongside Denmark, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, made a joint statement on the Greenland issue.
\nThe group argued that \u201csecurity in the Arctic\u201d must be \u201cachieved collectively\u201d by NATO while recognizing the US as an \u201cessential partner in this endeavor.\u201d
\n\u201cGreenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n

In the aftermath of its operation to kidnap Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the US again declared its aim to seize Greenland from Denmark, with the incident sending global shockwaves.
\nSpeaking to The Atlantic in an interview published on Sunday, US President Donald Trump said that the US should control the Arctic island given its strategic location, citing purported competition with the Russian and Chinese navies. \u201cWe do need Greenland, absolutely,\u201d Trump stated.
\nBoth Danish and Greenlandic authorities have rejected Washington\u2019s renewed claims to the island. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen urged the US to stop threatening its \u201chistorically close ally,\u201d warning the potential attack on her country would effectively end NATO.
\nGreenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen slammed Trump\u2019s \u201csuperpower rhetoric\u201d as \u201cunacceptable\u201d and \u201cinsulting.\u201d
