The Chinese Foreign Ministry has slammed the US attack on Venezuela and capture of Nicolas Maduro, calling them \u201chegemonic.\u201d
\nOn Saturday, President Donald Trump announced that his administration will \u201crun\u201d the oil-rich South American nation, shortly after US forces swept into the country and abducted Maduro and his wife.
\n\u201cChina is\u2002deeply\u2002shocked by and strongly condemns the US\u2019s blatant use of force against a sovereign state and action against\u2002its president,\u201d the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement later in the day.
\n\u201cSuch hegemonic acts of the US seriously violate international law and Venezuela\u2019s sovereignty, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region,\u201d it stated, demanding that Washington adhere to international law and the UN Charter.<\/p>\n

The US regime-change operation came just hours after a Chinese delegation\u2019s visit to key partner Venezuela, led by President Xi Jinping\u2019s special envoy Qiu Xiaoqi. Beijing has not released a statement on the meeting, but Caracas said it served to strengthen a \u201cmultipolar world of development and peace\u201d in the face of Western \u201cunilateral coercive measures.\u201d
\nChina and the heavily sanctioned South American nation have maintained a major \u201call-weather strategic partnership\u201d since 2023, and inked an investment deal in 2024.<\/p>\n

Following the US attack, Beijing echoed Moscow and condemned the \u201cforcible seizure\u201d of Maduro and his wife, and demanded their release.
\nIn the Venezuelan leader\u2019s absence, the nation\u2019s Supreme Court has granted Vice President Delcy Rodriguez presidential powers.
\nJust prior to the decision, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called Rodriguez to voice Moscow\u2019s solidarity and support for the Venezuelan government\u2019s defense of the country\u2019s national interests and sovereignty.
