President Donald Trump has outlined his vision for Venezuela following the US military intervention, stating the country must first be restored to \u201claw and order\u201d and economic discipline before any future elections can be considered.
\nIn an interview with the New York Post on Sunday, Trump brushed aside concerns that the unprecedented military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro could draw Washington into a protracted quagmire akin to Iraq or Afghanistan.
\nTrump framed the intervention as an attempt to save \u201cliterally a third world country ready to fail\u201d after decades of socialist rule.
\n\u201cWe should run the country properly,\u201d Trump stated. \u201cWe should run the country with law and order. We should run the country where we can take advantage of the economics of what they have \u2013 which is valuable oil and valuable other things.\u201d
\nOn Sunday, Venezuela\u2019s Supreme Court formally ordered Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to assume the presidency to guarantee the \u201ccontinuity of the State\u201d and \u201cdefense of sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rodriguez confirmed that she had spoken with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio but framed it as a defense of national dignity, stating Caracas is principally ready for \u201crespectful relations\u201d with Washington. She also said that Venezuela \u201cwill never return to being the colony of another empire\u201d and \u201cnever return to being slaves.\u201d
\nTrump warned Rodriguez she could be next after Nicolas Maduro, who is now in a New York jail after being abducted by US troops.
\n\u201cIf she doesn\u2019t do what\u2019s right, she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro,\u201d he told The Atlantic in another phone interview, arguing that he will not stand for Rodriguez\u2019s defiant rejection.<\/p>\n

Trump made it clear that a new election in Venezuela is not a priority for him, saying the US is currently\u00a0\u201cdealing with the people that just got sworn in,\u201d in apparent reference to\u00a0Rodriguez.
\n\u201cDon\u2019t ask me who\u2019s in charge, because I\u2019ll give you an answer, and it\u2019ll be very controversial… It means we\u2019re in charge,\u201d\u00a0he told reporters aboard Air Force One late on Sunday.
\nTrump also\u00a0refused to back any opposition figures, including Maria Corina Machado \u2013 a Nobel Peace Prize winner who had openly backed US military action against her own country.
