South Africa\u2019s ambassador to the United Nations, Mathu Joyini, has criticized Israel\u2019s recent recognition of Somaliland as \u201cironic and cynical,\u201d citing West Jerusalem\u2019s refusal to recognize Palestinian statehood.
\nSpeaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council in New York on Monday, Joyini highlighted the contrast between Israel\u2019s stance and international consensus.
\n\u201dIt is ironic and cynical that Israel wishes to be the only state to recognize Somaliland\u00a0while at the same time rejecting recognition of the State of Palestine, which the overwhelming majority of UN member states have recognized as being legal in terms of international law,\u201d she told the council.
\nThe meeting was convened at Somalia\u2019s request following\u00a0Israel\u2019s announcement\u00a0on December 26 that it had become the first UN member state to formally recognize the self-declared Republic of Somaliland as an independent sovereign nation.
\nSomaliland, a breakaway region in the Horn of Africa, has functioned autonomously since 1991 but lacks recognition from any other country.<\/p>\n

Joyini further argued that Israel\u2019s actions undermined global norms.\u00a0\u201cTheir actions that negate peace, such as the actions of the State of Israel therefore warrant condemnation.\u201d
\nIn a separate statement issued by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), spokesperson Chrispin Phiri echoed the condemnation.
\n\u201dThe recognition constitutes a violation of the Federal Republic of\u00a0Somalia\u2019s sovereignty\u00a0and territorial integrity and a direct threat to peace in the Horn of Africa,\u201d Phiri said.
\nHe added, \u201cIsrael\u2019s\u00a0action validates fragmentation and risks a domino effect of instability.\u201d<\/p>\n
