The Sunni Muslim region, which sits on the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden in East Africa, has an estimated population of 6.2 million.<br \/>\nIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar signed the declaration recognizing Somaliland as a sovereign state on Friday.<br \/>\nNetanyahu told Somaliland\u2019s leader, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, in a phone call that relations between West Jerusalem and Hargeisa are \u201cseminal and historic,\u201d and that Israel was planning on working with Somaliland on economic issues, as well as in the areas of agriculture and social development.<\/p>\n<p>                      \u00a9\u00a0 RT                                                        <\/p>\n<p>The Israeli prime minister invited Abdullahi to make an official visit to Israel, to which the latter replied that he would do so \u201cas soon as possible,\u201d according to a statement by West Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>            READ MORE: The US is about to hit \u2018Add to cart\u2019 on another forever war<\/p>\n<p>Abdullahi described Israel\u2019s recognition of Somaliland as the beginning of a \u201cstrategic partnership.\u201d He also expressed readiness for Somaliland to join the Abraham Accords, the agreement under which several Arab and Muslim states normalized ties with Israel.<br \/>\nSomalia, which considers Somaliland part of its territory, accused Israel of launching a \u201cdeliberate attack\u201d on its sovereignty. \u201cIllegitimate actions of this nature seriously undermine regional peace and stability, exacerbate political and security tensions,\u201d the country\u2019s Foreign Ministry said.<br \/>\nIsraeli Channel 12 reported earlier that Abdullahi made a secret trip to Israel in October, meeting with Netanyahu and security officials. According to the broadcaster, Israel and Somaliland strengthened ties as West Jerusalem examined the possibility of resettling the population of Gaza to another location during its military operation in the Palestinian enclave.<br \/>\nWhen asked by the New York Post whether the US might follow Israel in recognizing Somaliland\u2019s independence, President Donald Trump was not ready to do so, questioning \u201cDoes anyone know what Somaliland is, really?\u201d However, he promised to \u201cstudy\u201d the issue.<\/p>\n<p>            READ MORE: African state indefinitely bars entry to US nationals \u2013 media<\/p>\n<p>The head of the African Union, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, insisted that Somaliland \u201cremains an integral part\u201d of Somalia.
