Matthew Karnitschnig says independent journalism in Europe has become \u201can endangered species\u201d<\/p>\n
The European Commission has barred Euractiv from its background briefings after the outlet adopted what it described as a more critical approach to reporting on the \u201cEU bubble,\u201d according to editor-in-chief Matthew Karnitschnig.
\nFounded in 1999 by French media publisher Christophe Leclercq, the Brussels-based outlet focuses on EU policy and says it aims to \u201cunpack the complexities of EU politics, policies, and legislation.\u201d
\nIn an article published on Friday, Karnitschnig argued that independent journalism in Europe has landed \u201con the enemies list,\u201d particularly in Brussels, where many media outlets depend on the funding and goodwill of EU institutions, foreign governments, and lobbyists.
\n\u201cIn fact, it has become an endangered species,\u201d he wrote, adding that independent voices are no longer encouraged\u00a0in the EU.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the beginning of this year, we set about infusing the \u2018EU bubble\u2019 with a heavy dose of critical journalism,\u201d Karnitschnig said. \u201cNot all recipients reacted well, least of all the Commission, which recently banned us from its background briefings \u2013 the off-the-record sessions during which President Ursula von der Leyen\u2019s advisers seek to steer the message they\u2019re trying to send on any given issue to the press.\u201d
\nThe editor cited several examples of coverage he said may have contributed to the decision, including the outlet\u2019s debunking of the commission\u2019s claims regarding von der Leyen\u2019s flight navigation incident in Bulgaria and its criticism of plans to establish a European intelligence service.<\/p>\n
