\nThe policy \u201cclassifies based on the medical condition of gender dysphoria,\u201d rather than sex or transgender status, they said.
\n\u201cThe United States military enforces strict medical standards to ensure that only physically and mentally fit individuals join its ranks,\u201d the judges said. \u201cFor decades, these requirements barred service by individuals with gender dysphoria, a medical condition associated with clinically significant distress.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hegseth made the change in February, a week after President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled \u2018Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness\u2019. The decision directed the Department of War to ban anyone with a history of gender dysphoria from service, arguing the condition is \u201cinconsistent\u201d with the US armed forces\u2019 \u201chigh standards.\u201d
