The Indian and Russian leaders have held talks on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Tianjin<\/strong><\/p>\n

The people of India, the most populous country in the world, are \u201ceagerly waiting\u201d<\/em> for Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s visit to India later this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Putin on Monday.<\/p>\n

He is set to travel to India for an annual bilateral summit with Modi in December.<\/p>\n

During their talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, the two leaders stressed that the strategic partnership between their nations is expanding across various sectors.<\/p>\n

\u201dThis year in December, for our 23rd summit, 1.4 billion Indians are eagerly waiting for you,\u201d Modi told Putin.<\/p>\n

Modi said Russia and India have walked \u201cshoulder-to-shoulder\u201d<\/em> in the \u201cmost difficult of situations,\u201d<\/em> adding, \u201cOur close cooperation is important not only for the people of both countries but also for global peace, stability and prosperity.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Calling Modi his \u201cdear friend,\u201d<\/em> Putin said, \u201cDecember 21 marks 15 years since the adoption of the joint statement which marked the transition of our relations to the level of a special, privileged, strategic partner.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The Russian president added, \u201cWe can confidently state that the multifaceted Russian-Indian relations are actively developing, based on these principles.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

During their talks, Modi also brought up the Ukraine issue. \u201cWe welcome all the recent efforts for peace,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cWe hope that all parties will move forward constructively. A way has to be found to end the conflict as soon as possible and establish lasting peace. This is the call of the entire humanity.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Before the delegation-level talks, Putin and Modi reportedly spent about an hour of one-on-one conversation in the Russian leader\u2019s Aurus vehicle. \u201cThey communicated both in the car while driving and then continued their discussion inside the car,\u201d<\/em> Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told TASS.<\/p>\n

This is the first meeting between Putin and Modi this year, though they regularly speak by phone.<\/p>\n

Putin\u2019s upcoming visit to India is set to boost bilateral ties in a complex geopolitical landscape.<\/p>\n

The South Asian nation has been slapped with 50% tariffs by the US \u2013 25% for its continued purchases of Russian oil.
