{"id":12078,"date":"2025-05-28T22:52:30","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T19:52:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mongolianews.mn\/?p=12078"},"modified":"2025-05-28T22:52:30","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T19:52:30","slug":"uk-eyeing-permanent-arctic-military-presence-telegraph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mongolianews.mn\/?p=12078","title":{"rendered":"UK eyeing permanent Arctic military presence \u2013 Telegraph"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>London has teamed up with Nordic NATO member states in what Russia views as a dangerous militarization of the region<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The British government may be considering establishing a permanent military presence in the Arctic due to the perceived threat from Russia, The Telegraph has reported, citing <em>\u201cspeculation\u201d<\/em> around the forthcoming Strategic Defence Review.<\/p>\n<p>While NATO has been actively ramping up its military capabilities in the region, London has made a point of strengthening individual partnerships with Norway and Iceland.<\/p>\n<p>Russia has repeatedly insisted that NATO\u2019s continuing militarization of the Arctic is unwarranted, and that Moscow will have to mirror its moves to maintain the balance.<\/p>\n<p>In an article on Wednesday, The Telegraph claimed that <em>\u201cthere is speculation that Labour\u2019s forthcoming Strategic Defence Review will result in British forces being permanently stationed in the Arctic.\u201d<\/em> The newspaper referred to a broad review that was commissioned by the Labour government last year.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy began a visit to Norway and Iceland, where the further military buildup of the Arctic is topping his agenda.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on X the following day, he wrote that the <em>\u201cArctic is NATO\u2019s northern flank.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to The Telegraph, Lammy stated that the region is <em>\u201cfast becoming an area of intense focus for geopolitical competition,\u201d<\/em> and further claimed that <em>\u201cRussia has been building up its military presence here for years.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The British newspaper quoted Ed Arnold from the Royal United Services Institute, a London-based think tank, as saying that with the Russian military currently busy in Ukraine, NATO should seize the opportunity now to <em>\u201censure supremacy in the Arctic.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n        <span><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mf.b37mrtl.ru\/files\/2025.04\/thumbnail\/67ed809285f540634e75d67c.jpg\" alt=\"RT\"><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/russia\/615149-no-one-has-comparable-fleet\/\">Breaking the ice: How Russia\u2019s nuclear fleet outpaces rivals<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In April, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte revealed that member states were <em>\u201cworking together\u201d<\/em> in the Arctic to <em>\u201cdefend this part of NATO territory.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The same month, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told the French weekly Le Point that Russia was taking measures to address the buildup of NATO forces in Northern Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Finland abandoned its longstanding policy of neutrality and became a NATO member in April 2023, citing security concerns over the Ukraine conflict. Sweden followed suit in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>In late March, Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that Moscow is <em>\u201cconcerned by the fact that NATO countries as a whole are more frequently designating the far north as a bridgehead for possible conflicts.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI would like to emphasize that Russia has never threatened anyone in the Arctic,\u201d<\/em> the Russian president clarified.
