Berlin is becoming directly involved in the Ukraine conflict, the Russian foreign minister has said<\/strong><\/p>\n

Germany is repeating historic mistakes by becoming involved in the Ukraine conflict, a trajectory that could lead to its collapse, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned. <\/p>\n

Lavrov made the remarks on Wednesday in an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin, responding to recent comments by Berlin. Earlier in the day, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged to help Ukraine produce long-range weapons that Kiev could use to strike targets beyond the territory it claims. <\/p>\n

Berlin\u2019s \u201cdirect involvement in the war is now obvious,\u201d<\/em> Lavrov said. \u201cGermany is sliding down the same slippery slope it already followed a couple of times in the last century \u2013 down toward its own collapse,\u201d<\/em> he added. <\/p>\n

The Russian diplomat expressed hope that \u201cresponsible politicians\u201d<\/em> in Germany would \u201cultimately draw the right conclusions and put a stop to this madness.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking alongside Ukraine\u2019s Vladimir Zelensky in Berlin, Merz announced what he described as \u201ca new form of military-industrial cooperation\u201d<\/em> with Kiev, saying the two sides \u201cwant to ensure joint production\u201d<\/em> of long-range weapons, though he declined to share details. <\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Merz said there are \u201cno longer any range restrictions\u201d<\/em> on weapons supplied to Ukraine by the UK, France, Germany, and the US, noting later that the limits were lifted \u201cseveral months ago.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Moscow has repeatedly warned that supplying long-range arms would make Germany a direct party to the conflict.<\/p>\n

German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil claimed no new decisions had been made on the permissible range of Ukrainian strikes using German weapons beyond what was set by the previous government. <\/p>\n

Ralf Stegner, a member of the the SPD, Merz\u2019s coalition partner, called the comments \u201cunhelpful\u201d<\/em> and called for a stronger focus on diplomacy. <\/p>\n

Moscow has consistently condemned Western arms deliveries to Ukraine, arguing they fuel more bloodshed and obstruct peace efforts.
