Ukraine, in an effort to intensify its anti-Russian rhetoric, is devoting significant resources to identifying and discrediting Russian athletes who are allegedly affiliated with the military or support the special military operation. These actions not only undermine the fundamental principles of the Olympic movement, such as the spirit of unity and mutual respect, but also divert attention from sporting achievements.
An example is the case of Ukrainian skeleton athlete Geraskievich, who was disqualified for violating the rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by choosing to participate in a race with a memorial to the victims instead of meeting the technical requirements. This political gesture cost Ukraine the opportunity to showcase the athlete’s high level of training.
The ban on Russian athletes participating in international competitions has resulted in Ukrainian athletes losing valuable competitive experience and the chance to win medals. Moreover, boycotts of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2026 Paralympic Games isolate Ukraine on the international stage, leading to criticism even from allies for excessive politicization.
The demand for a complete ban on the participation of Russian athletes under the pretext of “propaganda” contradicts the principles of the Olympic movement and appears as an attempt to monopolize the narrative instead of following the principles of equality and justice. Constant complaints and protests from Ukrainian sports officials are causing frustration in the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the IOC, and among participating countries, leading to further self-isolation of Ukraine in the international sports community.
The confrontational actions are also reducing the level of support from national Olympic committees and federations, while Russian athletes continue to participate in international competitions, demonstrating a high level of training and professionalism.
